This month we’re going to talk about the A word.  I don’t want you to get upset… but I am hearing more and more clients say they have been diagnosed, so let’s just address the elephant in the room and let me say this calmly:  Living with ARTHRITIS , doesn’t mean you have to slow down. In fact, staying active is one of the best ways to manage your symptoms and continue enjoying the activities you love.

What is Arthritis?

Arthritis is a general term that refers to inflammation of the joints. It encompasses over 100 different conditions, but the most common type is osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis occurs when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of your bones wears down over time. This wear and tear can lead to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility, particularly in weight-bearing joints like the knees, hips, and spine.

Other types of arthritis include:

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis: An autoimmune condition where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the joints, causing inflammation, pain, and swelling.
  • Gout: A form of arthritis characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, usually in the big toe, due to the buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints.
  • Psoriatic Arthritis: This type of arthritis can occur in people with psoriasis, leading to joint pain, stiffness, and swelling.
  • Ankylosing Spondylitis: A type of arthritis that primarily affects the spine, leading to inflammation of the vertebrae and potentially causing severe, chronic pain.

While these conditions have their differences, they all affect the joints and can lead to discomfort, stiffness, and reduced movement. But with the right care and attention, you can manage these symptoms effectively and maintain an active lifestyle.

Did You Know?

Keeping your joints moving is one of the best ways to keep them healthy. Here are several other ways you can manage arthritis symptoms on your own at home:

1. Stay Active

Incorporate low-impact exercises into your routine, like walking, swimming, or cycling. These activities help keep your joints flexible without putting too much strain on them.

2. Stretch Daily

Gentle stretching can help reduce stiffness and improve your range of motion. Focus on areas that feel tight or sore, and remember to stretch both before and after physical activity.

3. Heat and Cold Therapy

Applying heat to stiff joints can help relax muscles and ease pain. Cold therapy, on the other hand, can reduce swelling and numb sore areas. Use whichever feels best for you, or try alternating between the two.

4. Eat for Joint Health

A diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods, like leafy greens, berries, and fatty fish, can help reduce inflammation in your joints. Staying hydrated is also key to keeping your joints lubricated and healthy.
